The Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption Germany hosted three dialogue fora on current issues. Spoken language was german with many contributions delivered in English.

Beyond consumption restraint: Perspectives for climate compatible consumption

 

Following a public symposium in November 2010, the updated results report of the Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption Germany is now available for download or in hardcopy from THEMA1. (in German)

 

The report outlines experiences, considerations, and recommendations towards climate compatible consumption based on practical experiences with product carbon footprinting and reducing GHG emissions in the value chain. The Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption Germany builds upon the PCF Pilot Project and brings together partners from a range of sectors and stakeholder groups to promote climate compatible consumption.



Symposium of the Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption in Germany 

 

The Results Symposium of the Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption in Germany took place 22 November 2010. Over 140 representatives from business, government, non-government organisations and academic institutions discussed challenges in understanding and achievement of climate compatible consumption.

Within the symposium approaches, challenges and recommendations to foster climate compatible consumption were presented by the corporate platform partners and the platform initiators THEMA1, Öko-Institut - Institute for Applied Ecology, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). At a market place delegates could learn more about specific approaches to climate compatible consumption currently pursued by the corporate partners.

PCF Project Germany - The Idea


Goods and services and their consumption account for a major share in overall GHG emissions. Gaining a better understanding of these emissions as well as pathways for their reduction is of prime importance -- in the supply chain as well as with consumers. The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Project develops approaches for systematically assessing and communicating implemented and intended emission reductions. Participating companies jointly support the promotion of climate compatible consumption. Common international standards for the assessment and communication of product related carbon emissions are sought.


The PCF Pilot Phase

In the first project of its kind in Germany, ten businesses came together in 2008 to start measuring the life cycle emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases related to selected products and services - the Product Carbon Footprint, or so-called PCF.
The project was initiated by the think-do-tank THEMA1, WWF, Öko-Institut (Institute for Applied Ecology), and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. The project aims to give companies a platform for sharing practical experiences in assessing and communicating Product Carbon Footprints.

Companies participating in the scheme include:

BASF, dm-drogerie markt, DSM, FRoSTA, Henkel, REWE Group, Tchibo, Tetra Pak, T-Home, and Unternehmensgruppe Tengelmann.

In the first phase of the PCF Pilot Project, the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) was measured for 15 selected products and services. Case studies are documented here.

 

 

Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption in Germany

After the successful completion of the PCF Pilot Phase organisations from various sectors work together in the Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption in Germany. The content of the Platform builds dircetly on the results of the Product Carbon Footprint pilot project. The goal of the combined work is to identify and apply strategies that can make the maximum contribution to lowering carbon emissions. The focus is concrete reduction measures in the supply chain of the organisations, as well as the development of a useful approach for communicating to consumers on the green house gas emmissions in the purchase and use of products. The Platform for Climate Compatible Consumption in Germany (PKKD) is open to national and international organisations and stakeholders in order to apply and communicate reduction measures relating to a product’s complete CO2 balance, the so called Carbon Footprint. Individual experiences with climate compatible offers will be collected and shared with other organisations. The Platform is thus an important partner for private and public stakeholders to promote climate compatible consumption. The participating organisations develop an approach to the systematic assessment and design of the planned and executed emmission reductions.
